Plaistow Primary School, Walthamstow, London

Reception and years 1, 2 and 3 were looking the reasons why we take portraits of people, and explored how to look to build in the social aspect of this. The school as a whole was focusing on social, moral and spiritual issues in the context of its values, Perseverance, Success and Partnership.

Imaging Partnership was one of a selection of artists and arts based organisations that came into school to work with the children on various projects. Photography provided the opportunity for children, working in pairs, to be able to build communication together. As preparation for taking portraits, they were asked to find out all they could about each other, write this on a board take an accurate portrait from what they have learned using appropriate props. The projects set for the children were designed dependent on the ability level. The photography sessions lasted an hour and were rotated so that each of the year levels have a chance to get involved.
